A manager talking to employees.

It takes more than a mere title to truly embody leadership in a business. Maybe you are looking to be promoted into a position of authority, or perhaps have been recently promoted, or you have been in a management role for some time and want to improve how you are perceived. When it comes to leading others, behaving like a boss means conducting yourself in a manner that proves you deserve your position.

The character Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the series Star Trek: The Next Generation was played by the actor Sir Patrick Stewart. When Stewart was offered the role, Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, was against casting him in the role of the ship’s captain. Roddenberry felt that the character should have hair, as that wouldn’t be an issue in the future, and should be younger and more rugged. Basically, he was looking for another Captain Kirk. However, once Stewart was cast and started performing as the character, viewers were convinced he could lead the crew of the starship Enterprise. In real life, the man was just an actor playing a role, but he was able to embody the traits that go into being a good leader. This fictional character behaved like he was in charge and we, as an audience, believed it.
